Everyone is vulnerable to substance abuse and alcoholism, including those who have a religious faith who may encounter guilt and shame. The good news is, there are non-judgmental, Gospel-based solutions available.
When someone mentions the phrase “drug addiction,” it conjures up images of teenagers experimenting at parties. But the fact is, drug or alcohol addiction can afflict anyone. The abuse of prescription drugs is the most rapidly climbing form of substance abuse today.
And many people unwittingly find themselves addicted to drugs that they have to seek help and regain control of their lives.
Prescription Drugs are Dangerous
There is a presumption that medicines prescribed by a doctor are not as dangerous as the drugs you get on the streets, but this is not always the case. Prescription drugs can have serious side effects, can be addictive and may even cause the loss of lives if misused and abused.
Some 52 million Americans use medicinal drugs for recreational purposes at least once during their life, and every year prescription painkillers cause over 16,000 deaths and 475,000 trips to the ER.
What Does the Bible Say about Drug Abuse?
The Bible only mentions wine, so people usually take what it says about wine and apply it to other forms of drugs. Alcohol is mood altering, and so are prescription drugs when used inappropriately.
In Ephesians 5:18-20, it says, “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.” While in Proverbs 20: 1, it says, “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whoever is deceived thereby is not wise.”
It is clear that God disapproves of intoxication. It can be a slippery slope, however, and not everyone realizes that they are falling into the trap of addiction. Once a person is addicted, it can be hard to break the habit.
