It’s easy to get a tan in parts of Australia where there are a lot of beaches. For places that are mostly cold and cloudy, and during winter seasons, the best way to get a tan is through the use of self-tanning products.
What Is Sunless Tanning?
Sunless tanning, or self-tanning, is an attractive alternative to conventional sun tanning. It can give your skin a sun-kissed look without having to expose it to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sunless tanning products are usually sold as lotions, oils, sprays, and even pills. The best ones make use of an active ingredient called dihydroxyacetone (DHA) which is a colourless sugar that reacts with the dead cells on the skin’s surface. It results in a more tanned-looking skin that usually lasts for a few days.
Types of Sunless Tanning Products
Oils. A tanning oil is perfect for achieving a darker tan. It can be used for both indoors or outdoors, but they have a different formulation from each other, so you need to choose the right one based on your needs. Most tanning oils do not offer any SPF protection, so if you are going to use it outdoors, make sure not to stay too long under the sun.
Lotions – Tanning lotions are used to increase the production of melanin in the skin. The melanin chemical is used to darken the skin to create a beautifully tanned skin. This colour change is not permanent and will fade in about a week.
Pills – Instead of applying on the skin, tanning pills are consumed as a dietary supplement. It contains a chemical called canthaxanthin that can change the colour of your skin to appear more brownish. It is not a very safe method because ingesting a significant amount of canthaxanthin can cause hives, impaired vision, and could even damage your liver.
Sprays – Applying a tanning spray by yourself can be extra challenging as it requires an additional pair of hands. This is why it is used mostly in tanning salon booths. It might cost more having a professional apply it, but, at least, you will be sure that it is done appropriately and evenly. However, if you have dry skin, this is not the best type of tanning product for you.
Benefits of DHA Sunless Tanning
Because sunless tanning can be done in the comforts of your home, it allows you to achieve that perfect tan without having to expose yourself to the harmful effects of the sun such as leathered, wrinkled skin as you age or even skin cancer. The effects of DHA products last longer than other tanning products like bronzers as it can typically last between 3 and 10 days. Furthermore, it does not cause staining on clothing because it does not wipe off.
Most sunless tanning products do not contain much SPF protection in them. So it is recommended that you do not over expose your skin to the sun right after the application of a tanning product. However, if you really must go out in the sun, you should always apply sunscreen.
